LARN 039 C10D3
Start the following in class:
1. The required journal focus topic J39 for today is .
a. The energy of a photon and frequency of wave associated with it are directly proportional to each other. Explain what that means.
b. Write down the algebraic formula that expresses the direct relationship between the energy of a photon and the frequency of the wave associated with it.
c. Substitute the value of Planck’s constant with its units into the algebraic formula to demonstrate how the energy, E1, is solved for from the frequency, ν1, of the light. Next double the value of the independent variable to 2·ν1, and again solve for the photon energy, E. Explain how these two calculations demonstrate the concept of a direct proportion. [Hint: Solve for E in terms of E1 by substituting the value for ν1 from the first equation into the second equation.]
2.a. Go to https://socratic.org/chemistry to research the topics brought up in section 5.1 of your text, OR use the PQ5R or SQ5R method to prepare a study guide for pages 130 through 132 in section 5.1, Models of the Atom. You may record vocabulary entries in the body of your study guide, or you may check them off on the chapter 5 vocabulary list as you think about the meanings of the terms and add any notations to the vocabulary list for clarifications sake.
2.b. Writing in blue or black ink, place your hand in number in a circle followed by your name in the upper right white space of a piece of three holed composition paper in your learning log that hasn’t been written on. Place the page reference for the problems to be considered to the left of the red marginal line on the first blue line. Centered on the first blue line, write a descriptive title for the learning activity such as Section [chapter #.section#] Responses. Before you write your response to each question or problem listed below, write its designation to the left of the red marginal line as listed below, followed by your response in ink to the right of the marginal line.
- In the Section Assessment 5.1 on page 132, read, analyze, and show your work for practice problems I5-4 and I5-7.3.
- In the Section Assessment 5.3 on page 146, read, analyze, and show your work for practice problems I5-18, I5-19, I5-20, and I5-21.
- After you are finished, turn to page R85 of the text and check each of those problems that you can by writing in either a check mark (√) or a correction in green ink. Some questions do not have a suggested response given. For each such question, circle the number of the question in the margin of your notebook paper and check your response when you come to class.
Recommended for those who have time left in their 45 minute study period, but not required of all:
1. View the video Introductory Astronomy: Different Types of Spectra.
2. Open the Unit Learning Objectives for Cornell Notes document, Press and hold the CTRL key while typing F to bring up a search (find) box. Type in Chapter 5 in the search box and then move your cursor into the text area to the right and click there to see the first page of objectives. Consider each chapter 5 learning objective as you proceed through the chapter with the aim of being able to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply the learnings. Study and take study notes as seems appropriate.
3. Read the handout that you received for this chapter and do the worksheet review vocabulary activity entitled Quantum Mechanics and Electron Configurations .
