LARN 093 C24D1

Start the following in class:

1.  Today’s assignment is to practice balancing and checking them with the aid of a T chart format as explained in step four of the handout entitled How to Balance Chemical Expressions. The first two problems will be taken from your textbook page 329, and the next six to eight problems will be taken from the ActivInspire flipchart for balancing chemical expressions.  Download the current ActivInspire unit flipchart by logging on to the MNSD Google Drive and selecting it from the Student Resources > ActivInspire  > Unit 7 > Balancing Chemical Expressions > Balancing Chemical Expressions.  Generally the flipchart name will begin with a capital U and end in a relatively high version number following the v at the end of the flipchart’s title.

a. In the upper right corner white space of a new page of your Learning Log, use a blue or black pen to write your hand in number within a circle followed by your name.

       b. To the left of the marginal line, print page 329 and then underneath the page number and to the left of the marginal line write I11-11c and follow the instructions given in your text to do that problem.

       c. Skip a line and to the left of the marginal line write I11-11a and follow the instructions given in your text to do that problem.

       d. Skip a line and to the left of the marginal line write AI-ChemRx .

       e. Skip to the next line and to the left of the marginal line and underneath the AI-ChemRx write p25. Flip to page 25 of the flipchart. To the right of the marginal line on your paper, record the chemical expression that is displayed on page 25 of the flipchart and balance and check your work using the “T chart” format.

       f. Skip another line and to the left of the marginal line and underneath the AI-ChemRx write p33. Flip to page 33 of the flipchart. To the right of the marginal line on your paper, record the chemical expression that is displayed on page 33 of the flipchart and balance and check your work using the “T chart” format.

g. Page through the flipchart and select another chemical expression to balance and check with a “T chart”.  Again label the page number to the left of the marginal line.  Balance the expression and show your “T chart” check.

h. Repeat this step three to five more times for a total of eight to ten problems.

2.  In your Journal Notebook write your journal entry on sheets of three holed 8.5 inch by 11 inch ruled paper.

  • In the upper right corner white space of each upward facing page, use a blue or black pen to write your hand in number within a circle followed by your name.
  • To the left of the marginal line, print J93 and circle it.
  • Each journal entry should either be at least a paragraph of exemplary writing and penmanship concerning a single topic, or be a concept map relating chemistry terms. Begin each day’s paragraph with a topic sentence, follow with explained instances, and close with a focused summary statement.

The required journal focus topic J93 for today is:

a. Use words such as and, yields, produces, substance, element, and compound to describe a general pattern of reaction for a

  1. synthesis or direct combination reaction
  2. decomposition or dissociation reaction
  3. double replacement reaction
  4. single replacement reaction
  5. combustion reaction.

b.  Use symbols such as +, –>, and A, B, C, D, AB, AC, AD, etc. to describe a general pattern of reaction for each of the following types of reaction.

  1. synthesis or direct combination reaction
  2. decomposition or dissociation reaction
  3. double replacement reaction
  4. single replacement reaction
  5. combustion reaction.
