Study for the summative assessment on chapter 10 that is to be given on your next school day that our class meets.  Today is day 84.  Study for your test which is scheduled for school day 85!  If your class does not meet on day 85, today’s home learning activities are listed under day 85 and on day 86 your home learning activities are those listed below.

Start the following in class:

1. In your Journal Notebook write your journal entry, J84, on sheets of three holed 8.5 inch by 11 inch ruled paper.

  • In the upper right corner white space of each upward facing page, use a blue or black pen to write your hand in number within a circle followed by your name.
  • To the left of the marginal line, print J84 and circle it.
  • Go to Pearson Chemistry Link to Chapter 10 Formative Assessment and take an online formative test for chapter 10, Chemical Quantities.  In your journal notebook, for six (6) of the problems that need the use of a conversion factor to obtain the correct response, record your labeled work in the way demonstrated on pages 40 and 43 of the Chemical Quantities_v6 ActivInspire flipchart.
  • Then click on the online Score My Test button and study anything that you do not yet understand.

2.  In preparation for your summative assessment, review and reinforce your command over certain important concepts.

  1. Examine the chapter 10 Learning Objectives, one by one.  For each objective, consider:
  • Are you able to demonstrate your understanding or mastery of the objective?
  • How do you know that your answer to the previous question is as you said?
  • What has formative assessment of this objective revealed to you?
  1. Open this chapter’s flipchart(s) in the ActivInspire software program.  Study and review the concepts explained in the ActivInspire flipcharts until you are sure that you understand all the concepts listed.
  2. Review and study your notes, and your journal reflections. Study your Learning Log, your Cornell Notes, and anything that was misunderstood on the Chapter 10 Study Guides, Chapter 10 Section Reviews, Chapter 10 [Formative] Test A, and other work sheets which you now have checked using green ink.  Do a few problems from the chapter, showing your setup with units so that you will be able to problem solve quickly when you take this assessment!  Check your results against worked out problems in your Learning Log or against the suggested answers on pages R90 and R91.  Look up anything that you are unclear about in your text, ActivInspire flipchart, glossary, vocabulary study sheets, or class notes.

Recommended for those who have time left in their 45 minute study period, but not required of all:

  1. In your Journal Notebook write your journal entry on sheets of three holed 8.5 inch by 11 inch ruled paper.
    • In the upper right corner white space of each upward facing page, use a blue or black pen to write your hand in number within a circle followed by your name.
    • To the left of the marginal line, print J66 and circle it.

For your journal entry J84, you are to construct a concept map.  Please turn to page 314 in your text and, in your learning journal, construct a concept map relating the eight terms listed at the bottom of the page.  Connect related terms with arrows such that the subject of each sentence explaining the relationship is at the tail of the arrow, the verb describing the relationship of the subject to the predicate is written beside the arrow, and the arrow head is touching the oval of the term which is the object or predicate nominative of the verb that you have chosen.

  2. Review the meanings of the words on the chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, chapter 4, chapter 5, chapter 6, chapter 7, chapter 8, chapter 9, and chapter 10 vocabulary lists. Place a – symbol in front of each word that you have to study more, and a change the – to a + symbol in front when you have demonstrated mastery over the word to a study buddy, parent, or friend.
  3. Check out the student made Quizlet for chapter 10 at https://quizlet.com/180911867/ch-10-chemical-quantities-flash-cards/.  Do all the definitions reflect a thorough and correct understanding?
  4. Review the Key Concepts given on pages 33, 57, 95, 121, 148, 180, 206, 246, 280, and 314 of the text..
  5. Study the SI prefixes and their mathematical meanings until you can readily explain the meaning of each listed SI prefix as a numerical multiplier. Go over each of these concepts with your study partner.
  6. Review the concepts of substance, element, atom, compound, formula unit, phase, coarse mixture, colloidal suspension, solution, aqueous phase, chemical change [as different from a physical change], chemical reaction, reactant, product, word equation, and formula unit equation. Go over each of these concepts with your study partner.
  7. Review the differences in the properties of metals, ionic compounds, covalent network solids, and covalent molecular compounds listed on the Properties to be understood worksheet.
    1. Review how the typical properties of members of these classes of compounds depend on whether the compound has localized or delocalized electrons, and upon whether strong metallic, ionic, or covalent bonding or weak van der Waals forces of attraction are predominant between representative particles of the substances.
    2. Relate each property of a given covalent molecular substance to the groups of covalently bonded atoms that form molecules whose van der Waals attractive forces only weakly attract other molecules.
    3. In your Learning Log record any question(s) you would want to ask your teacher in class about the above mentioned properties.
  8. Continue studying both the schema for naming cations, the schema for naming anions, and the schema for naming compounds on the document entitled Inorganic Nomenclature.

NOT APPLICABLE THIS YEAR:

1. Continue studying for any of your Mid-Term Examination make up examinations.

2.  Continue studying for your open ended portion of your mid-year examination worth 20 points out of the total 100 points and the selected response portion of your mid-year examination worth 80 points out of the total of 100 points possible. The test will cover material from chapters one through ten and will be taken at your assigned test time as shown on the Infinite Campus web site.

3. Read over your Honors Chemistry Topics review sheet packet for the first semester, and make sure you understand each concept and are able to do each type of calculation listed. If you do not have a copy, the review packet can be printed to the library printer. You can find it on your Google Drive > Student Resources > Handouts LARN 82.
