Study for the summative assessment on chapter 4 that is to be given on your next school day that our class meets. Today is day 37. Study for your test which is scheduled for school day 38! If your class does not meet on day 38, today’s home learning activities are listed under day 38 and on day 38 your home learning activities are those listed below.
Start the following in class:
1. The topics for the journal entry J37 are
a. What characteristic distinguishes each element from every other different element? Cite one or more examples and explain how each example demonstrates the concept being considered.
b. What characteristic distinguishes isotope from other isotopes of the same element? Cite one or more examples and explain how each example demonstrates the concept being considered.
c. Is an atom of an element still an atom of the same element if it were to lose or gain one or more electrons? Justify your response with reasoning. Cite one or more examples and explain how each example demonstrates the concept being considered.
2. Go to http://www.phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?wcprefix=cda&wcsuffix=1040&area=view and take an online formative test for chapter 4, Atomic Structure. Then click on the Score My Test button and study anything that you do not yet understand.
3. You need to prepare well for your very important summative assessment of chapter 4!
- Make sure that you study and review the flipcharts entitled Dalton’sAtomicTheory and Isotopic Symbol & Average Atomic Mass until you are sure that you understand all the concepts listed.
- Study the class notes you have taken and the prepared notes that we have gone over in class. Study what you checked in green on the Chapter 4 Atomic Structure Section Reviews and Formative Test A. Look up anything that you still don’t understand in your text, glossary, vocabulary study sheets, class notes, .. or ask someone more knowledgeable, get National Honor Society tutoring, or come to help class.
Recommended for those who have time left in their 45 minute study period, but not required of all:
1. Open the Unit Learning Objectives for Cornell Notes document, Press and hold the CTRL key while typing F to bring up a search (find) box. Type in Chapter 4 in the search box and then move your cursor into the text area to the right and click there to see the first page of objectives. Be able to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply the learnings described in the learning objectives.
a. Know the distinctions between pairs of chapter 4 vocabulary words that might be confused with each other.
b. Review the development of atomic theory according to the textbooks authors and take note of who [Democritus, John Dalton, Eugen Goldstein, J.J. Thomson, Robert A. Millikan, Ernest Rutherford, Henry Moseley, James Chadwick, Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll] hypothesized or discovered what and when.
c. Be able to draw logical conclusions from data (as those scientists did). Note what John Dalton believed about atoms and know how his beliefs differ from current atomic theory.
d. Know the symbol, location within an atom, charge, and mass in unified atomic mass units for protons, neutrons, and electrons.
e. Be able to solve problems in which atomic number, mass number, and atomic charge are used to specify the numbers of protons, neutron, and electrons in the isotope, and vice versa.
2.
- Continue to study the meanings of the words on the chapter 4 vocabulary list. Place a – symbol in front of each word that you have to study more, and a change the- to a + symbol in front when you have demonstrated mastery over the word to a study buddy, parent, or friend, or use Quizlet.
- Study the Key Concepts given on pages 33, 57, 95, and 121 of the text.
- Review the SI prefixes and their meanings until you can readily explain the meaning of each listed SI prefix as a numerical multiplier.
