LARN 033 C9D1
Start the following in class:
1. The required journal focus question J33 for today is:
What are the differences in the meanings of the terms
a. atomic mass unit, u,
b. isotopic mass,
c. mass number of an isotope
d. atomic mass of an element?
2.a. Go to https://socratic.org/chemistry to research the topics brought up in section 4.3 of your text, OR use the PQ5R or SQ5R method to prepare a study guide for text section 4.3 on Distinguishing Among Atoms. Read section 4.3 in your chemistry text, pages 110 through 119, and as you do, create a study guide using the SQ5R or PQ5R method explained in class and on the distributed handout packet. You may record vocabulary entries in the body of your study guide, or you may check them off on the chapter 4 vocabulary list as you think about the meanings of the terms and add any notations to the vocabulary list for clarifications sake.
2.b. If necessary, review the instructions for doing in-chapter formative assessment problems given on LARN 032.
- Study Conceptual Problem 4.1 on page 111 and then show your work for practice problems I4-15 (In chapter 4, problem 15) and I4-16.
- Study Sample Problem 4.1 on page 112 and then show your work for practice problem I4-17.
- Study Conceptual Problem 4.2 on page 113 and then show your work for practice problems I4-19 and I4-20.
- Study Conceptual Problem 4.3 on page 116 and then show your work for practice problems I4-21 and I4-22.
- Study Sample Problem 4.2 on page 117 and then show your work for practice problems I4-23 and I4-24.
- In the Section Assessment 4.3 on page 119, read, analyze, and show your work for practice problems I4-30, I4-32, and I4-33.
- After you are finished, go to page R84 of the text and check your response to each problem that you can by writing in either a check mark (√) or a correction in green ink, or in the margin of your page, circle the number of any question not listed on page R84, so that you check your response to the question when you come to class.
Recommended for those who have time left in their 45 minute study period, but not required of all:
1. Open the Unit Learning Objectives for Cornell Notes document, Press and hold the CTRL key while typing F to bring up a search (find) box. Type in Chapter 4 in the search box and then move your cursor into the text area to the right and click there to see the first page of objectives. Consider whether you can do chapter 4 learning objectives 3 through 9, and study them as you proceed through the chapter with the aim of being able to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply the learnings. Study and take study notes as seems appropriate.
